Renewable alkanes by aqueous-phase reforming of biomass-derived oxygenates.

چکیده
A clean stream of alkanes from renewable biomass resources is obtained through aqueous-phase reforming in a single reactor. Alkanes are produced from biomass-derived sorbitol through a bifunctional pathway (see scheme) that involves the dehydration of sorbitol on acid sites (SiO2/Al2O3) and hydrogenation of intermediates on a metal catalyst under a H2 atmosphere. Hydrogen is produced from sorbitol and water on the metal catalyst in the same reactor. G. W. Huber, R. D. Cortright, J. A. Dumesic* 1549 – 1551

A review of catalytic issues and process conditions for renewable hydrogen and alkanes by aqueous-phase reforming of oxygenated hydrocarbons over supported metal catalysts
We have recently developed a single-step, low-temperature process for the catalytic production of fuels, such as hydrogen and/or alkanes, from renewable biomass-derived oxygenated hydrocarbons. This paper reviews our work in the development of this aqueous-phase reforming (APR) process to produce hydrogen or alkanes in high yields. First, the thermodynamic and kinetic considerations that form t...

Research is being conducted worldwide to develop new technologies for the generation of liquid fuels from renewable resources. In this context, it was stated recently that “biomass is the only practical source of renewable liquid fuel”. This is of utmost importance for sustainable development. Currently, biodiesel is produced by transesterification of vegetable oils and ethanol by fermentation ...
متن کاملRenewable Hydrogen Produced from Different Renewable Feedstock by Aqueous-Phase Reforming Process
Aqueous phase reforming (APR) of biomass derived feedstock producing hydrogen was reviewed. The APR process was discussed based on different feedstock categories such as sugars, polyols and ethanol. The mechanism of APR was analyzed referring to different structures of feedstock. The reaction pathways of APR were investigated. The usage of catalysts should be judged by feedstock on the requirem...
متن کاملTheoretical Investigation of Heterogeneous Catalysis at the Solid - Liquid Interface for the Conversion of Lignocellulosic Biomass Model Molecules
Catalytic conversion of biomass-derived oxygenates to fuels and value-added chemicals is a promising strategy in the search for renewable and sustainable energy sources. Most relevant catalytic processes are carried out in an aqueous environment using supported transition-metal catalysts. The reaction network consists of multiple series and parallel pathways leading to formation of hydrogen, al...
متن کاملLiquid-phase catalytic processing of biomass-derived oxygenated hydrocarbons to fuels and chemicals.
Biomass has the potential to serve as a sustainable source of energy and organic carbon for our industrialized society. The focus of this Review is to present an overview of chemical catalytic transformations of biomass-derived oxygenated feedstocks (primarily sugars and sugar-alcohols) in the liquid phase to value-added chemicals and fuels, with specific examples emphasizing the development of...
